Grant Guidelines and Application

Sunrise - New Paragraph Graphic The New Ulm Area Foundation's Grant Program will accept applications twice each year, Spring and Fall, to make grant awards in June and December. The application deadlines are as follows:

  Spring Grant Program
  Applications Due - May 1st
Fall Grant Program Applications Due - October 1st




Guidelines:

Each grant application must follow the guidelines established by the Foundation. The Foundation's application guidelines are as follows:

Eligibility:

  • Organizations and agencies applying for funds must serve residents in the New Ulm and/or surrounding area.
  • Grants are restricted to nonprofit organizations which have a 501(c)(3) tax exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service and to government agencies.

Criteria:

The Foundation considers the following criteria for the use of dollars requested in the review of grants (in order of importance):
  1. Match for other grants
  2. Match for funds raised or to be raised from other sources
  3. Planning
  4. Staff and volunteer training and enhanced public awareness

Other Criteria:
  • Projects developed in consultation with other agencies and planning groups, and those which promote coordination and sharing among organizations and the elimination of duplicated services.
  • The Foundation operates without discrimination as to race, age, religion, sex, or national origin in the consideration of grant requests, and will award grants only to agencies and organizations which do not discriminate as to race, age, religion, sex, or national origin.
  • Organizations who receive grants will be asked to add an acknowledgment (e.g. that funding was provided by the New Ulm Area Foundation) to all written materials completed using grant dollars.
  • The organization applying for a grant will list any prior grants, with purpose and/or use, received from the New Ulm Area Foundation within the past five years.

Restrictions:
  • Grants are not usually made to support operating expenses of well-established organizations or in response to annual fund drives. On occasion, the Foundation may provide such support on a short-term basis when it is critical to the survival of a key agency or program which has been placed in jeopardy by changes in funding patterns.
  • Capital purchases will only be granted if they are exceptional or unique applications or are deemed necessary for a program of the organization.
  • Grants are not usually made to establish or to add to endowment funds.
  • Grants will not ordinarily be made for the general use of churches or for sectarian religious purposes.
  • Grants are not made to individuals.

Narrative Information:
  1. A description of the Project. Include purpose and objectives.
  1. A description of the specific purpose of the funds requested.
  1. Why the project is needed in the community. Include its significance and an estimate of the number of New Ulm area residents who will benefit.
  1. Provide Board/Committee or Staff qualifications. Include all staff assigned to the project and describe their qualifications or experience in relation to the project's purpose, their probable availability for the duration of the project, and whether or not they can be replaced in the event they resign or are otherwise not available.
  1. A statement advising how the grant, if made, can be evaluated with regard to the funds going to the agreed-upon purpose and the effectiveness of the project.
  1. A detailed budget showing how the money will be spent. Include a summary of the project's projected revenue sources and, if applicable, the plans for continued funding of the project.
  1. Provide a statement as to why the New Ulm Area Foundation support is requested, a description of what other efforts have been made to obtain required funding, and a list of approved, pending, and denied requests. Include the amount received to date from other sources.

Other Documentation:
  1. A copy of the organization's IRS tax-exempt letter.
  1. A complete list of the organization's governing board members and their principal occupations, including their mailing addresses.
  1. Evidence that this application has the approval of the organization's Board of Directors (a copy of the minutes to a Board of Directors meeting).
  1. The latest annual budget reflecting expenditures, receipts, and a statement of assets.
